In this commentary, the authors provide a summary of the unintentional outcomes of policies which result in maternal/infant separation including the negative impacts of this separation on breastfeeding. This is an important consideration given the importance of breastfeeding for the health of mothers and their children. Considering the challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the authors urge policy makers to consider the harmful impacts of separating mothers and their babies.
