Storing and using expressed breastmilk

Situations can arise when mothers need to express breastmilk.

Expressing can be useful when:

  • the baby is premature
  • to relieve engorgement, blocked ducts or mastitis
  • when the mother returns to work/study
  • as part of a strategy to help increase milk supply
  • to collect milk for feeding in the mothers' occasional absence
